Mokena…A new law co-sponsored by State Representative Renée Kosel (R-New Lenox), which will increase safety on Illinois’ roadways, is among 81 new laws that take effect January 1. 

 

House Bill 4203 (P.A. 95-0884) allows the court to increase the penalty for those who violate “Scott’s Law” by failing to properly avoid a stationery emergency vehicle and cause the death of another person.  The law would also allow such action to be determined as reckless homicide, which is a Class 2 felony punishable with a 3 to 14 year prison sentence.

 

“Following emergency protocol is simple and saves lives.  The new law will provide courts with more flexibility when an offender causes the death of another person by failing to follow ‘Scott’s Law,’” Rep. Kosel said. Continue reading »
